New Features of GA4

Lesson Summary

Google Analytics 4 (GA4) introduces new tools and features to help users optimise tracking and gain valuable insights:

  • Enhanced Measurements offer out-of-the-box event tracking without developer intervention.
  • Events such as scroll tracking, outbound clicks, site searches, form interactions, video engagement, and form downloads are automatically captured in GA4.
  • Users can customise reports in GA4 by including/excluding metrics, selecting dimensions, and filtering based on specific criteria.
  • Reports can be saved for easy access and reuse, streamlining the reporting process.
  • GA4 allows for archiving, deleting, and amending conversions, providing more control over data management.
  • Data modeling, behaviour modeling, and anomaly detection are enhanced in GA4 to identify irregularities in data trends.
  • Comparing date ranges in GA4 is simplified with the "Match Day of the Week" feature for easier analysis.
  • The improved debugger tool, DebugView, allows users to monitor events and data flow within GA4 interface.

These new features and enhancements in GA4 offer users more flexibility, control, and efficiency in tracking and analysing data compared to Universal Analytics.

Google's guidance on Enhanced Event Measurement can provide further insights on leveraging GA4 features effectively.

Glossary of Terms

  • Enhanced Measurement A set of automatic, "out-of-the-box" tracking features available immediately upon setting up a GA4 account. These allow you to track specific user interactions without needing developer assistance or Google Tag Manager configurations.
  • Scroll Tracking A specific type of Enhanced Measurement that automatically sends an event to GA4 when a user scrolls down to 90% of a page.
  • Outbound Clicks An Enhanced Measurement event triggered when a user clicks a link that leads to an external website (a domain different from your own).
  • Site Search An event triggered automatically when a user performs a search within your website, sending that data directly to GA4.
  • Customisation (Reports) The capability to modify reports or build new ones from scratch. This includes the ability to include or exclude specific metrics and dimensions, apply filters (e.g., focusing only on organic search or a specific country), and save these views to your main report section for easy access later.
  • Anomaly Detection A feature powered by artificial intelligence and data modelling that automatically identifies irregularities or "spikes" in your data. It alerts you to unexpected performance changes that may require further investigation.
  • Matching Day of the Week A date comparison setting that aligns past data by the specific day of the week (e.g., Monday to Monday) rather than just the calendar date. This ensures more accurate comparisons when analysing performance over different time periods.
  • DebugView A diagnostic tool located within the GA4 interface. It allows you to observe events firing in real-time, helping you verify that data is being sent correctly and ensuring the right information is captured during setup.
  • Conversion Archiving An improvement over Universal Analytics that allows users to delete or amend conversions more freely. Unlike the previous "Goals" system (which was limited to 20 per view and could only be switched off), GA4 allows you to fully archive conversions you no longer need.
